Bree Sharp, like many of us, has a crush on an unattainable celebrity.
Only this 23-year-old wrote a little witty ditty about her big fat infatuation for David
Duchovny, put it on a demo, and somehow the tape made its way to the brooding X-Files star.
The man who would be Mulder apparently liked it, word began to get around, and Sharp got a
record contract.
The Bree Sharp buzz has begun; get famous people talking about you and
your stock goes up. It also helps that "David Duchovny" is a truly funny song. In addition
to "David Duchovny," Sharp's debut shows she's not just a one trick pony. The record
contains other smartly written songs about our media-drenched daily culture. "America" is
about the nation's submission to the boob tube.
"Faster Faster" is written for a character in a Russ Meyer-style movie,
about a beautiful, tough motorcycle chick who'd kill you for the change in your jeans'
pockets. The LP's title track is like a hard-boiled dime store novel, capturing the dark
charms of second rate film noir.
Sharp, with her adept handle of guitar-based rock, is good at these kind
of clever story-telling songs. In matters of the heart, this young songwriter doesn't make
as strong offerings. However, for a 23-year-old N.Y.U. grad with a huge crush on David
Duchovny, A Cheap and Evil Girl is a very worthy start.
